Anyone that suffers with acne (Zits) may feel as if they spend most of their time searching for remedies; but that doesn\'t mean it\'s something that cannot be tackled. It is one of those areas where research has continued to make advancements; now, some of these skin conditions are gradually being conquered. Acne skin care products all fall into one of three main categories:

  • Internet or Drugstore: Treatment that helps prevents condition
  • Over-the-counter
  • Prescription only: Requires visit to doctor

Preventative products are formulated to treat the skin in an effort to control the occurrence of acne; for example, special toners and skin cleansers. Many people use products similar to this every day as part of their skin care regime; often used by those who want to prevent future skin problems from occurring. More specialized cleaners are designed in the same way as acne skin care products; they are formulated to reduce and limit the amount of oil in the pores of our skin. Excess oil needs to be stopped from clogging the pores as this oil make it easier for bacteria to grow, exacerbating the condition.

This type of skin care treatment also includes those which exfoliate such as skin peels; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. This type of peel helps reduce the chance of oil clogging up the pores as well as removing other skin impurities; this can reduce the bacterium growth on your skin. Many other acne skin care products have become available over the counter and on the internet; they don\'t usually require a prescription. These formulations contain the chemical benzoyl peroxide and the naturally occurring salicylic acid; these include creams, cleansers and peels that slow down acne formation.

It is preferable when you first start using this type of product to keep the concentration of it low, around 5.5 percent is best; if a reaction occurs, a cleaner or cream containing alpha hydroxy acid should be safe. Because we all have different types of skin, more than one type of acne skin care product may need to be tried; if nothing you use is effective then speak to your dermatologist for advice. Products that your dermatologist or doctor will recommend will only be available on prescription, they may include a course of antibiotics or topical ointments.

Your doctor can recommend that in order to extract the contents of the pustules that a small surgical procedure could be carried out; never try to squeeze your zits however, as it can lead to permanent damage of your skin. Hormone treatment might be suggested as hormone changes can cause skin problems; hormone changes are known to be one cause of acne. The end result is dealing with this skin complaint is not the problem it once was, there are now a huge range of products specifically formulated for the task.
